Online Platforms & Content Moderation

Our Policy Positions

Online platforms play a crucial role in shaping digital spaces where users connect, share, and express themselves. For LGBTQ+ individuals, these platforms often serve as vital lifelines, providing community, support, and visibility - and effective content moderation is essential to ensure these spaces remain safe and inclusive. Poorly implemented moderation practices can expose users to hate speech, harassment, and misinformation, while overzealous censorship can suppress LGBTQ+ content and voices. Striking a balance between protection and freedom of expression is critical for fostering digital environments that are equitable and affirming.

We support moderation practices that combine proactive tools, user empowerment features, and consistent enforcement to ensure digital app stores and platforms remain inclusive spaces.

Preserving LGBTQ+ Access

For LGBTQ+ individuals, online platforms are essential spaces for visibility, advocacy, and self-expression. These platforms amplify voices, share resources, and foster connections often unavailable in physical communities. However, restrictive policies and overcensorship can limit LGBTQ+ representation, erasing vital content that informs and supports individuals navigating their identities. Ensuring access to arming digital spaces is not only a community priority but also a matter of protecting constitutionally guaranteed free speech. Policies must safeguard LGBTQ+ content while addressing risks like harassment and hate speech to ensure platforms remain equitable and inclusive.

LGBT Tech advocates for transparent policies that protect LGBTQ+ content and representation online. We support frameworks that prioritize free speech while addressing and preventing harmful practices, ensuring equitable access to the digital spaces that empower LGBTQ+ individuals.

Combating Hate Speech

LGBTQ+ individuals frequently face hate speech and harassment online, creating unsafe environments that undermine mental health and safety. Proactive content moderation is crucial for identifying and removing harmful content, especially as the LGBTQ+ community is among the most targeted by online abuse. Robust reporting tools, user controls like muting and blocking features, and AI-driven moderation systems must work in tandem with human oversight to effectively combat hate speech. Ensuring that platforms prioritize user safety and accountability fosters more inclusive and arming digital spaces for marginalized communities.

LGBT Tech advocates for transparent and proactive tools and policies that address hate speech and misinformation against LGBTQ+ communities while maximizing user input and control. We advocate for clear and transparent moderation practices and guidelines that empower users with reporting tools, enforce accountability, and protect marginalized voices while ensuring safe online environments.

Content Moderation

Effective content moderation requires transparency, consistency, and fairness in enforcement. For LGBTQ+ individuals, biased or opaque moderation practices can disproportionately suppress content, limit visibility, and foster discrimination. Platforms must implement clear community guidelines, transparent decision-making processes, and robust appeals systems to ensure that moderation is both equitable and accountable. Anti-discrimination procedures and inclusive training for moderators are vital for preventing bias against LGBTQ+ users, fostering trust, and maintaining fair digital spaces.

LGBT Tech supports transparent, equitable content moderation policies with clear guidelines, appeals processes, and anti-discrimination safeguards. We advocate for practices that protect LGBTQ+ users from bias while ensuring fair enforcement across all communities.

Section 203 Protections

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act provides crucial protections that allow online platforms to host user-generated content without being held liable for every post. This framework enables free expression while allowing platforms to moderate harmful content. For LGBTQ+ individuals, Section 230 ensures the availability of spaces for visibility and advocacy. Balancing these protections with transparency and accountability is essential to prevent misuse and overreach, and policies that emphasize user empowerment, fair moderation practices, and platform accountability uphold the benefits of Section 230 while addressing its challenges.

LGBT Tech supports strong Section 230 enforcement and intermediary liability laws and protections internationally as cornerstones of online expression. We advocate for policies that balance liability protections with transparency, empowering users while maintaining safe, inclusive digital environments for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Recent Work & News

Algorithmic Fairness

Algorithms play a significant role in shaping online experiences, but poorly trained systems often over-censor LGBTQ+ content, limiting visibility and representation. Biased algorithms can suppress arming voices, amplify harmful trends, or misclassify LGBTQ+ expressions as inappropriate. Ensuring fairness requires training algorithms on inclusive datasets, improving transparency in algorithmic decision-making, and allowing users to understand and challenge content moderation decisions. Promoting algorithmic fairness is essential for creating equitable online spaces that empower LGBTQ+ individuals and protect their digital presence.

Through our policy work and Project AllyAI, LGBT Tech champions inclusive algorithmic practices, regulations and policies that reduce bias and promote fairness. We advocate for transparency measures, accountability standards, and inclusive datasets to ensure LGBTQ+ content is accurately represented and protected across digital platforms.
