On June 15th, LGBT Tech’s Executive Director and Co-Founder, Chris Wood, participated in Family Online Safety Institute’s webinar discussing the connection between digital life and mental health within the LGBTQ+ community, and the organizations harnessing those connections to create safe spaces online to affirm and empower LGBTQ+ young people. Panelists discussed ways in which parents, educators, and family members can protect and support LGBTQ+ youth both online and offline, and the many resources that are available for youth to access positive and uplifting communities and live as their authentic selves. “There are a lot of platforms where it’s easy to be anonymous and those platforms, we’ve most certainly seen, embolden action to be harmful to certain communities because they can hide behind a shield. For parents, and as a parent myself, thinking about these spaces that you are having our youth engage in and ensuring that they are engaging in spaces where it is safe, where it is required to have a certain level of identifiable information, seems to be a way that we found, not only as a parent, but as a community to help protect our LGBTQ+ individuals and create a more positive space for them and create that positive interaction.” stated Chris Wood during the event.
