On June 28th, LGBT Tech’s Executive Director and Co-Founder Chris Wood joined Miriam Vogel's In AI we Trust? podcast, with guest-co-host Kathy Baxter, for a special episode in celebration of Pride Month. The conversation centered around duality of technology within the LGBTQ+ community and how it serves as both an impactful medium, fostering connections in the LGBTQ+ community, and a potentially harmful tool against the same individuals. Throughout the discussion, Chris and Miriam shed light on the crucial significance of diversity in the tech industry and the complexities surrounding representation in LGBTQ+ datasets. Additionally, the episode explored the remarkable research and initiatives undertaken, ranging from improving broadband access in rural communities to the exciting venture of LGBT Tech building its own AI technology.
"For so long, the LGBTQ+ community has been one of the most understudied communities and left out communities when it comes to research and data. Of course, we want to make sure that individuals are safe if that data is collected and we want to make sure that it's anonymized. We want to make sure that we're not putting anyone in harm's way, but I have to underscore that is important that the data is being collected, because if that data is not collected, then we are not counted, and we do not have a voice," Chris stated during the podcast.
