Entrusting devices to repair technicians involves an unavoidable level of trust concerning the privacy of sensitive personal information, including details about sexual orientation and gender identity. Given this, as Colorado considers “right to repair” legislation codifying access to third party repair services, we urge the inclusion of strong consumer protection standards.
LGBT Tech encourages lawmakers to prioritize consumer privacy, safety, and security through the inclusion of clear guidelines on accessing and using consumer information, especially when it is not necessary for the repair being performed. We commend the legislature for their work in this space, and encourage Coloradan policymakers to craft legislation that balances the need for repair accessibility with robust privacy and security protections.
