Please attribute the following statement to LGBT Tech.
At LGBT Tech, we understand that access to affordable and reliable repair services is essential for all consumers, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals who rely on their devices for private and secure connections to affirming resources, healthcare, and support networks. However, it is crucial that expanded access to repair services does not come at the expense of critical protections for personal security.
As New Mexico legislators consider S.B. 69, we urge them to prioritize strong consumer protection standards within the framework of this bill. Privacy and data security must be safeguarded through clear guidelines that ensure repair providers access only the information necessary for the repairs they perform. Without these protections, consumer, particularly those from marginalized communities, remain at heightened risk of data misuse, breaches, and other harms. Transparency and accountability measures are critical to prevent data misuse and protect trust, as is a balanced and tech-neutral approach that accounts for the diverse ways manufacturers secure devices and safeguard consumers in New Mexico and across the ecosystem.

We commend the New Mexico legislature for their attention to this important issue and urge them to continue advancing policies that empower all New Mexicans, including LGBTQ+ residents, to access affordable repair services without compromising their digital security or well-being.
